Lehigh Valley’s top football teams of PIAA playoffs era: No. 5, Bethlehem Catholic 1988

The Bethlehem Catholic football team was making history in early December 1988, but the Golden Hawks didn’t quite grasp the significance.

“No, we didn’t know what it was all about, because it was all new,” said John Mattes, who was Becahi’s quarterback. “It was the first time for everybody. All we knew was that it was nice to be the last team still playing. Most teams were done after playing 11 games, but here we were still playing after everyone else was done and getting a lot of attention from the media.”

Lehigh Valley’s top football teams of PIAA playoffs era: No. 6, Bethlehem Catholic 1990

The record will show Bethlehem Catholic won the 1990 PIAA 3A title with a 43-7 rout of Seton-LaSalle in Hershey on Dec. 8.

But in the hearts and minds of the Golden Hawks family who closely followed the team, the state gold truly was won a week earlier in an epic Eastern championship battle that people still talk about nearly 30 years later.
